“At the base of Mount Humantay, situated at 4200 meters above sea level, lies Humantay Lagoon, considered one of the tourist wonders hidden in the Peruvian mountains. In this post, we’ll share details on how to get there, what to see, and offer some recommendations to consider when exploring.
When to visit Humantay Lagoon? What is the weather like?
The climate at Humantay Lagoon is generally mild during the dry season (from April to November) and rainy with cloudy skies from December to March. The temperature typically ranges between 4°C and 17°C. The best time to visit is between May and November, with sunnier days allowing for a better reflection of the lagoon.
What’s more convenient: going on your own or taking a tour?
You can reach the lagoon independently or through a tour (either private or group). If you prefer to go on your own and manage your own time or avoid crowds, you can negotiate a fare with a taxi to take you, wait for you to ascend and descend, and bring you back. However, coordinating and hiring taxis or finding restaurants can be time-consuming, so we recommend going with a travel agency. Guided tours provide insights into the flora and fauna, and some agencies offer the option of horseback riding. Tours can be booked in advance online or in Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, typically including transfers, guides, breakfast, and lunch for a full-day excursion.
Are vaccinations needed to visit Humantay Lagoon?
Vaccinations are not required for visiting Humantay Lagoon. If you plan to travel to the Amazon rainforest afterward, a yellow fever vaccination is necessary. It’s highly advisable to have travel insurance covering medical expenses to avoid any disruptions to your vacation.
What to do at Humantay Lagoon?
Trekking: The only way to reach the beautiful lagoon is through a hiking trail, making it a sought-after destination for hiking enthusiasts. The hike is steep, almost at a 45-degree angle, and a bit slippery in some places. While some tourists prefer ascending on a mule, the descent must be done on foot. The trek starts at 3870 meters above sea level and reaches 4300 meters.
The first 30 minutes are semi-flat, followed by an uphill climb with a steep slope, winding through a rocky slope, and finally descending to a small stream fed by the cold waters just meters from Humantay Lagoon. Due to the rocky terrain, cold, and altitude, the hike takes an average of one and a half hours, depending on your physical condition. Although it is a demanding hike, the entire journey is worthwhile, and the reward upon reaching the lagoon is priceless.
Admire the natural landscape: The geographical location and mineral richness make the lagoon a unique natural spectacle. It is surrounded by an incredible valley and snow-covered mountain scenery of the Vilcabamba mountain range. The lake’s waters are crystal clear, with a turquoise hue that captivates all who arrive.
Mountain biking and stand-up paddling: For the more adventurous, the surroundings of Humantay Lagoon serve as an ideal setting for these sports.
Observe and learn about the exotic flora and fauna of the mountain range.
